The nkondi figures were made with the intention of helping chiefs seek out and punish witches and wrongdoers. These figures were highly respected by the members of the community. The medicine pouch on the stomach of this figure is adorned with a cowrie shell. Often shells were attached to power figures, as it was believed that the shell would transfer some of the water spirit's power to the figure.
