Kafue National Park
General
Overview
Kafue National Park is Zambia’s oldest and
largest park, in fact, one of the largest national parks in the
world (twice the size of Yellowstone). The Kafue River contributes
to the great diversity of landscapes making this one of the most
rewarding of all the African parks. The Busanga Plains in the
north of the park is one of Zambia’s most significant wetland
resources - a vast floodplain fed by the Lufupa River system.
Wildlife
Kafue is prime safari territory. Lion are widespread
all over the park and are frequently spotted on the plains, as
are cheetah. Also found in the park are leopard, zebra, sitatunga,
sable antelope, red lechwe, elephant, buffalo, blue wildebeest,
eland, hippo and crocodile. Kafue is also home to many species
not commonly seen elsewhere in southern Africa, including defassa
waterbuck, Liechtenstein’s hartebeest and roan antelope. The birdlife
is also abundant with over 450 species recorded. Near the river
expect to see fish eagles, darters, and cormorants.
